Thyroid Supplements

Benefits of Thyroid Supplements
Written by Grant Kara
The thyroid is a small, but powerful gland that sits in the front of your neck and affects every part of your body.  Though we normally think of the heart, lungs and brain as the most important organs, we shouldn’t discount the work of this gland in the quality of our overall health and well-being.  While it doesn’t control our breathing or the flow of blood or direct the thoughts and functions of the body, the thyroid does regulate metabolism.

When it’s working effectively, we hardly notice the thyroid.  We have energy; we are able to maintain a healthy weight as long as we stay on track with good food choices and exercise, and we feel and look healthy.  But, when the thyroid stops working the way it should, a myriad of problems start to show up.

First, it’s often the “spare tire” around the mid-section that bothers us.  We might start feeling tired, or lose interest in sex with our spouse.  We assume these are all normal parts of aging or a by-product of being too busy and having too much on our plates all the time.  We continue the cycle by eating worse, dropping exercise from our schedule and fall asleep with the television on at night.  Within the space of a year or so, our thyroid isn’t working nearly as well and our health has taken a turn for the worse.

Middle Age or Hypothyroidism?

What many people don’t realize is that weight gain, fatigue and even mild memory loss may be a clue to a larger problem and one that can be reversed when you take some simple but effective steps.  These symptoms, and others like them, point to an under active thyroid, which is a condition known as hypothyroidism.

Sometimes, it is easier to accept fatigue or weight gain as part of the normal aging process; but often that is not the case.  When you find that your symptoms are encroaching on your enjoyment of life, you are probably ready to accept that it’s not just a matter of getting older.

Your thyroid may be dysfunctional.  Its sole job is to take the iodine from the food we eat and supplements that we take and convert it into hormones that regulate metabolism.  When you have enough of these important hormones, things go swimmingly.  You still have to watch what you eat and, if you want real health, exercise, but you don’t find that weight creeping up and your energy level is steady.
At the other end of the spectrum, when your thyroid isn’t making enough hormones, you definitely start to feel the negative effects.  A diagnosis by your doctor may take a long time to get, but if you have symptoms of hypothyroidism, you can use natural thyroid supplements to boost your body’s metabolism.

Supplements for better health

Thyroid supplements work in tandem with your body and in particular with your thyroid gland to enhance the amount of hormones you are producing.  They put more iodine into your body and help your thyroid absorb it more effectively.  The end result is that they help you improve your health from the inside out.

Be aware of what you are buying when you are shopping for thyroid supplements.  There are many products on the market that claim to boost metabolism, but some of them do so through the use of stimulants.  Some are no more than an “energy” drink disguised as a thyroid supplement.  They use caffeine or synthetic stimulants to give you the appearance of energy without any of the beneficial outcomes of a real thyroid supplement.

When you are shopping for thyroid supplements, be sure to look for one with a broad spectrum multi-vitamin base that will help you restore some of the nutrients that are missing from your diet.  In addition, a good quality thyroid supplement will have the following herbs:

  • Licorice
  • Shilajeet
  • Makandi (Coleus Forskohlii)
  • Kanchanara
  • Green Oats (Avena sativa)
  • Bladder wrack (Fucus vesiculosus)
Thyroid supplements are just that, supplements.  They work with a healthy lifestyle, not instead of it.  You will only find the benefits of a thyroid supplement if you use it in tandem with an overall plan to get back to your optimum health.  Start with a visit to your family doctor to get an clean bill of health and be checked for other types of disorders.  If you haven’t exercised in a long time, it’s important to check with your doctor before embarking on a workout plan.  Once you know where you stand health wise, you can start benefiting from the thyroid supplements and using them alongside your new healthy habits.  Before you know it, your weight gain, fatigue and other symptoms will be fading and you will enjoy renewed energy from the combination of thyroid boosting supplements and healthy choices.
